 Cat with head mirror

Because of the shorter lifespan of our pets, we stress the importance of an annual physical examination.  Thorough check-ups and preventive care help to alleviate or eliminate serious health problems which decrease quality of life and/or shorten life span.

Dr. Alice Simpson and her staff at The Cat Doctor offer a wide range of medical and non-medical services and products to keep your companions feeling their best:

  • Complete medical, surgical, and dental services:

We offer comprehensive physical examinations, vaccinations, surgery including reduced-cost spaying and neutering of cats less than six months old, diagnostic laboratory and radiology services, pharmacy, and hospitalization.  In addition, we provide complete dental services including dental radiography, endodontic therapy, and restorative dentistry as well as routine teeth cleaning and polishing, tooth extractions, and minor oral surgery.

Our on-site laboratory provides for serum chemistry, hematology, serology, urinalysis and parasite testing.  This allows us to make accurate, quick diagnoses, often within 30 minutes so that appropriate treatment can be started immediately.  We also utilize commercial veterinary laboratories for more extensive or specialized diagnostics and consultations.

We offer in-hospital referrals to internal medicine specialists who perform ultrasound exams and endoscopic procedures and help us with the diagnosis of more complicated cases.  We work closely with local specialty referral practices and emergency hospitals to offer the very best medical care available.

  • Grooming and bathing:

We give haircuts, baths, nail trims and more, always delivered with sensitivity to your pet's individual needs and personality.  Since we are a hospital, we can utilize sedative and anesthetic drugs when necessary to groom and clip hair mats on cats who do not tolerate handling.  "Lion clips" are popular for Persians, Himalayans, and other longhaired cats.  We also give medicated baths/dips for skin conditions such as ringworm or seborrhea.

  • Veterinary-supervised boarding:

Our indoor, climate-controlled boarding facility is an integral part of our hospital so your cat is under observation and veterinary supervision during office hours.  A free physical exam is included in our boarding fees.  We have a zero tolerance policy for fleas so cats with fleas on arrival will be treated with Cheristin for Cats.  With this policy you know your cat will never pick up fleas at our boarding facility.

  • Behavioral Counseling:

We can provide advice on problems such as not using the litter box, scratching the furniture, excessive grooming, and aggression toward other cats in the household or people.

The most common cause of litterbox aversion is the box isn't cleaned often enough.

  • Soft Paws Application:

Soft Paws are a humane alternative to declawing for indoor cats that scratch furniture.  They are soft vinyl nail caps that are glued over the nails every couple of months or as needed.  We carry numerous sizes and colors and can apply them in the clinic and teach you how to apply them at home.

  • Dietary Counseling:

We can provide guidance regarding your pet's nutritional needs for each life stage, including dietary requirements for growth, weight maintenance and performance.  We carry veterinary diets and special foods which are used to treat a variety of medical problems affected by nutrition including kidney disease, gastrointestinal disorders, urinary crystals, obesity, and other conditions.  Pill Pockets are special soft-moist treats with a hollow center that are very convenient for giving pills to cats that like treats.

  • Individualized Flea Control Programs:

We develop programs for the specific needs of your pet and your own particular environmental situation. We will review with you the best ways to control fleas in your house, in your yard and on your cat using effective and safe flea control products.  We carry Cheristin for Cats, the newest and most effective topical flea control product for cats.  For many years we relied on Advantage, and for many years it worked outstandingly well.  But in the last couple of years it is losing its effectiveness for most people.  It may be that fleas are getting resistant to it.  Cheristin for Cats is a completely different chemical.  It is not a neonicotinoid and does not kill flying insects like bees.  We also carry Seresto flea collars which are effective for 8 months against fleas and ticks and are convenient and economical.  Frontline Plus is the only other product for use on cats that is labeled for ticks, but it is less effective against fleas than other products.
